Poisoning the Yamuna

Poisoning the Yamuna findings of a study on polychlorinated biphenyls ( pcb s) shows an unusually high level of toxic persistent organic pollutants ( pop s) in the Yamuna river. Government officials, however, continue to be dismissive about the issue of pcb s polluting the environment, irrespective of the fact that these substances can cause reproductive and developmental defects in humans. pcb s and pop s do not easily disintegrate and therefore pose a grave risk to the environment.

The study was conducted in 1993-94 by the environmental sciences department of Jawaharlal Nehru University ( jnu ), Delhi, at five locations along the Yamuna river
