Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Dakshin Banga Matsyajibi Forum Vs Inland Waterways Authority of India & Others dated 27/07/2022. 

The National Green Tribunal (NGT), July 27, 2022 directed  Inland Waterways Authority of India, Syamaprasad Mookherjee Port (SMP) and Transport Department, West Bengal to file standard operating procedure (SOP) with regard to prevention of accident on the inland waterways before September 13, 2022.

The matter related to frequent capsizing of barges carrying fly-ash on the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route which flows through the highly eco-sensitive and fragile Sundarbans. The application was filed before the NGT, Eastern Bench, Kolkata by Dakshin Banga Matsyajibi Forum, working on issues of small scale and artisanal fishing communities dependent upon the Hooghly river and the Sundarbans for their livelihood.
