NGT directs committee to look into waste management in and around Haji Ali Dargah, Worli, Mumbai, 18/07/2022

The National Green Tribunal, July 18, 2022 directed constitution of a committee comprising officials from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to conduct on the spot inspection of Haji Ali Dargah premises in Worli, Mumbai in the presence of Haji Ali Dargah Trust. The Committee would also propose a future action plan to keep the place clean.

The report in the matter must be filed by the Committee within four weeks, the order added.

The court noted that the affidavit filed by Haji Ali Dargah Trust and the MPCB showed that some steps have been taken by Trust to meet the challenges of controlling pollution.

Six students — Aamir Shaikh, Deepak Chatap and others in their application to the NGT have said that due to improper management of solid waste which includes materials related to religious ceremonies - flowers, plastic and cloth products - these are being dumped in the Arabian Sea that surrounds the shrine.
