Order of the Madras High Court regarding opening up of paddy procurement centres for farmers during rainy season, Tamil Nadu, 10/06/2021

  • 10/06/2021

Order of the Madras High Court in the matter of Suo Motu Writ Petition Vs The Government of Tamil Nadu & Others dated 10/06/2021.

A suo motu writ petition was filed in the Madras High Court to direct the concerned authorities to open the paddy procurement centres where the cultivation is on a larger scale, without the farmers making representation for procuring their products, as they fear that due to lack of proper storage facilities, the paddy bags would start sprouting if the rain continues.

The bench comprising Chief Justice of Madras High Court Sanjib Banerjee and Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy said it was necessary that some policy or measure be indicated to take care of the paddy which is harvested and sometimes left to dry in open fields, particularly in the month of June, when there is the odd chance of a heavy downpour.

The court expressed hope that appropriate measures would be taken and put in place on an immediate basis as there is threat of rain in the next few days. The matter was listed for hearing, June 17, 2021.
