Order of the Madras High Court dated 07/06/2021 on the matter of abuse of police personnel by the public while carrying out COVID duties.

The bench of Justice N. Anand Venkatesh said that the police are already functioning under severe stress due to the pandemic situation and everyone must realize their responsibility. As the police are only performing their public duty and when they question anyone who is moving around, when there is total lockdown, the concerned person  is expected to answer the police.

"The Police cannot be subjected to abuse and threat by anyone and such acts must be dealt with very sternly," the Madras HC said and directed the petitioner to file an affidavit expressing regret for the entire incident and giving an undertaking that he will not involve himself in any such activity in future. That apart, the petitioner must deposit a sum of Rs.10,000 as compensation.
