Submission of report by the government of Assam in compliance with the National Green Tribunal order of September 21, 2020 in Original Application No. 593 of 2017 (Paryavaran Suraksha Samiti Vs Union of India & Others).

The NGT had directed all the states/UTs to address gaps in generation and treatment of sewage/effluents by ensuring setting up of requisite number of functional ETPs, CETPs and STPs. The Assam Government in its report stated that the Assam Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Board (AUWSSB) has been designated as nodal agency for establishing STPs in urban areas (excluding Guwahati Municipal Corporation). Presently there are no existing STP in Assam.

The AUWSSB had been directed by Urban Development Department, Assam for establishment of STPs in five major cities of Assam namely - Nagaon, Tezpur, Silchar, Jorhat and Mangaldoi. Detailed project reports (DPR) have been prepared by the AUWSSB. During preparation of DPRs, AUWSSB has taken necessary measures so that no untreated sewage/effluent gets discharged  to any water bodies in Nagaon, Tezpur, Silchar, Jorhat and Mangaldoi.
