Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 dated 12/09/2019 regarding compliance of Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and other important issues relating to environment.

The CPCB filed reports on the matter which included a report on the 'Annual Environment Plan' for the country and compliance of environment norms and gaps. Reports were also submitted by the State Level Committees on the subject of solid waste management, apart from some states.

On enquiring from the CPCB on the future course of action on the matter, the Tribunal was informed that the state level reports are not complete for want of sufficient information from the states and Union Territories (UTs). Information was required in terms of some thematic areas like compliance to Solid Waste Rules (including legacy waste), Bio-Medical Waste Rules, Construction and Demolition Waste, Hazardoud Waste Rules, E-Waste Rules and others which was lacking in the state reports. The NGT directs the Chief Secretaries of all the states and the UTs to submit the required information to CPCB in a specified format. The Chief Secretaries have been asked to submit compliance reports on whether any model cities and villages have been made environmentally compliant within a month.
