Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sunil Kemble Vs Union of India & Others dated 26/02/2019 regarding the status of nallahs in Kolhapur. NGT in its previous order had asked the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation to strictly adhere to the timeline for treating sewage and submit bi-monthly report as well as a status report. NGT had also expressed grave concern on the condition of river Panch-Ganga being a recipient of sewage of other pollutants from the catchment of river, and had accordingly, directed Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board (State PCB) to undertake water quality monitoring of the river on coliform and faecal coliform besides other water quality parameters, viz., pH, DO, BoD, CoD, TSS, TDS and other relevant parameters on a monthly basis.

The National Green Tribunal while expressing its dis-satisfaction at the manner in which the regulatory bodies have been dealing with the matter direct the Kolhapur Municipal Corporation and State PCB to deposit environmental compensation in the sum of Rs. 5 lakh each within 15 days with the CPCB. The performance guarantee of Rs. 50 lakhs be deposited also with the CPCB within a period of 15 days.
