Monthly Overview on State of Environment, Maldives, January 2014

ENVIRONMENT

Minister of State for Environmental Ministry, Hassan Shah has said that the Maldives  ministry is now working with Maldives Police Service to establish Environmental Police to protect the environment and natural resources of the Maldivian nation through enforcement and public outreach.

WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION

An integrated water resource management system under the 8.2 million United States Dollars Programme “Increasing Climate Resilience through an Integrated Water Resource Management” started at Gadhdhoo island. This project costing with approximate cost of 2 million United States Dollars is funded by the Adaptation Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Minister of Environment and Energy Thorig Ibrahim said that the government looks forward to manage the wastage in the short run and would establish a waste management system in three  areas of Maldives. The minister also signed an agreement with the German company Michaelis GmbH & Co. KG to establish an incineration plant at Raa atoll Vandhoo island which would eliminate 40 tonnes of waste per day. This plant will also be able to  produce energy from the waste with further investments.

HEALTH AND OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS

The Health Protection Agency (HPA), Maldives  has advised the public to beware as hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) spreading in some islands.

The announcement came as Abu Dhabi hosted the Fourth Assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) – attended by a delegation from the Maldives. Minister of Environment and Energy Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim has signed, on behalf of Maldives, the statement on the Global Renewable Energy Atlas at the 4th General Assembly of International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) held from 18th -19th January 2014 in Abu Dhabi, capital of United Arab Emirates (UAE).
