A new sanctuary

asiatic lions in the Gir Sanctuary in Gujarat will be shifted to the Kuno Palpur Sanctuary in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh to prevent their extinction. The shrinkage in forest cover and the uncontrolled hunting of wild animals have led to their dwindling numbers. Apart from the reintroduction of Asiatic lions, there is also an attempt to develop a rehabilitation and eco developmental plan for people likely to be affected by the project. Work on the Rs 64 crore project would involve relocation and rehabilitation of the Sahariya tribals from Palpur to Aagra village in Morena district . An eco development plan for about 3,700 sq km area would be established by the year 2015 to accommodate the lions. The Kuno Palpur sanctuary is being developed to sustain the existence and the natural growth of lions. The lions will be relocated to this protected area by the year 2001.
