The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) marketing companies have again increased its price by Rs 1.50 per kg, to Rs 56.50 after a period of 15 days. LPG distributors on Friday said that the companies had raised LPG price by Rs 10-15 per 11.8-kg cylinder to Rs 595-600, and 45.4-kg cylinder to Rs 2251. The raise in LPG prices has been effective from Friday.
The world's top oil producers and consumers convene in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia tomorrow to grapple with record high oil prices, with some OPEC members baulking at consumer demands for more crude. While Saudi Arabia, the world's biggest oil exporter, was widely expected to announce an output hike at the meeting, OPEC president Chakib Khelil slammed consumer pressure for a production increase to take pressure off soaring prices. "To ask the oil producers to increase their output is illogical and irrational," Khelil was quoted as saying today by the Algerian news service APS.

Iranians on Saturday were told to cut their electricity consumption by 10 per cent or face daily power cuts because of a severe drought and low production by hydroelectric power plants. Residents of the capital Tehran could face up to four hours of blackouts each day, officials said according to media reports. "If consumers do not cut down consumption by 10 per cent, we will have blackouts until the end of the summer,' Deputy Energy Minister Mohammad Ahmadian told Fars news agency.
INFLATION IMPACT Inflation is expected to come down to 5.5 per cent in financial year 2008-09 and kharif crop is likely to play a major role in this regard, says the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE). "We retain our forecast of 5.5 per cent inflation for the year FY'09. We expect inflation to increase further in the next couple of months and start receding from September onwards," CMIE said in its monthly review. Inflation, measured in the wholesale price index (WPI), increased to 11.05 per cent for the week ended June 7.

Lorry owners staged a protest against the short supply of diesel in Kadiri town of Anantapur district on Monday. They were facing a shortage of diesel for the last few weeks due to short supply to the town. Earlier, nearly one lakh litres of diesel used to be supplied to the town everyday, but this has come down to 50,000 to 60,000 litres, with no supply for one or two days. This resulted in a high demand for diesel.
